OG on the brink of disqualification from TI 2024 qualifiers: how Sebastian ‘Ceb’ Debs’ personal circumstances put the team at risk

The legendary captain of the team Sebastian “Ceb” Debs, who left to support his wife during childbirth, put the team in a difficult position, and the incident itself caused a wide resonance in the esports community.
What happened?
On June 21, 2024, the esports world was shocked by the unexpected news: Sebastian “Ceb” Debs was leaving the team for the duration of the TI 2024 closed qualifiers to be with his wife for the birth of their child. The move was respected by many, but the tournament rules set by the operator PGL put OG at a huge disadvantage.
Rules that do not forgive exceptions
According to the PGL regulations, teams participating in the closed qualifiers are not allowed to change their main roster after the start of the competition. This strict rule is aimed at ensuring equality among participants, but it does not take into account force majeure circumstances, such as the birth of a child.
OG notified the organizers of possible complications in advance, back in May. However, after lengthy discussions, the team was allowed to use a substitute for only one match. On June 21, Russian Alexander “Immersion” Khmelevskoy took Ceb’s place in a match against one of OG’s rivals. Unfortunately, the match ended in a loss for the team.

The esports community is divided into two camps. Some support Ceb and OG, believing that tournament operators should take the human factor into account and make exceptions in such situations.
